24K Gold Jewelry: A Buyer's Guide to Purity, Pricing, and Trade-In in Cambodia
Short answer
24K gold is 99.9% pure gold — the highest standard sold as jewelry, with essentially no other metal mixed in. It’s the standard most Cambodian buyers ask for by default, both for wearing and as a store of value, because purity is easy to verify and the resale value tracks the daily gold price closely. The tradeoff is that pure gold is soft, so 24K pieces are usually simpler, heavier designs rather than fine filigree — which is exactly why most of our stone-set pieces (rings, pendants with diamonds) are offered in both 24K and 18K, so you can choose purity or durability depending on what the piece is for.
What the karat number actually means
Karat measures how many parts out of 24 are pure gold:
| Karat | Purity | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| 24K | 99.9% gold | Investment bars, traditional Cambodian jewelry, simple bands |
| 22K | ~91.6% gold | Traditional/ornate jewelry in some regional markets |
| 18K | 75% gold | Stone-set rings and pendants — harder, holds prongs better |
| 14K | 58.5% gold | Everyday-wear pieces, more scratch-resistant, less common locally |
Lower-karat gold isn’t lower quality — it’s gold alloyed with metals like silver or copper specifically to make it harder and more scratch-resistant, which matters more for a ring you wear daily with claw-set stones than for a smooth chain or bangle.
How to check gold purity
Every piece we sell is hallmarked and weighed openly on a certified scale in front of you at the time of sale — you see the exact weight and the karat stamp before you pay. If you’re buying elsewhere, look for:
- A hallmark stamp (e.g. “999” or “24K”) stamped somewhere on the piece — usually the clasp or inner band.
- A receipt stating karat and weight, not just price — this is what lets you verify or resell the piece later.
- A shop that weighs in front of you, not in a back room.
How gold pricing works day to day
Gold is priced by weight against the international gold rate, which moves daily. We quote every piece at the current day’s rate plus a fair making charge for labor and design — not a fixed markup that ignores the market. That’s also why trade-in and resale values change day to day: it’s the metal price moving, not us moving the goalposts.
Gold trade-in: upgrading without paying twice
Bring old gold — a chain that’s out of style, mismatched earrings, a piece that no longer fits — and we weigh it in front of you at that day’s rate, on the spot. That value credits directly toward any new piece, whether it’s a straight swap for similar weight or the starting point for a custom design (see our custom 3D design process if you want to redesign it into something new entirely). No shipping it off, no waiting days for a quote.
Caring for 24K gold jewelry
Because pure gold is soft, a few habits keep it looking new for decades:
- Store pieces separately — 24K gold scratches against harder metals and even against itself.
- Remove it for manual work — gardening, gym, cleaning with chemicals.
- Bring it in for a free polish — every piece bought from us gets lifetime resizing, polishing, and ultrasonic cleaning at no charge.
