Custom Jewelry Design: How We Take a Ring or Necklace from Idea to 3D-Printed Proof to Gold
Short answer
Custom pieces at LAAR EK Jewelry — rings, necklaces, pendants, bracelets — are never carved or cast from guesswork. Our jewelry maker builds your design as a 3D model first, 3D-prints a physical proof of it, and puts that proof in your hands so you can see, hold, and approve the exact size, shape, and setting before any real gold or stone is committed. Only after you sign off does the piece get cast for real.
Why we design in 3D before touching gold
Hand-carved wax models are how custom jewelry used to be made everywhere, and some workshops still work that way. The problem: a hand-carved wax is a one-shot guess. If a ring’s shoulders are too thick, or a pendant’s bail sits at the wrong angle, you often don’t find out until the piece is already cast and it’s too late to fix cheaply.
A 3D-designed piece solves that. The design lives as a digital file first, so proportions, stone placement, and metal weight can be checked and adjusted on screen before anything is printed — and once it is printed, you’re looking at an accurate, life-size proof of the final piece, not an artist’s impression of it.
The process, step by step
- Consult. Bring a sketch, a photo of something you like, a family piece you want remade, or just a description of what you’re picturing. We talk through metal (24K or 18K gold), stone choice (natural, CVD, or HPHT diamond), and budget.
- 3D design. Our jewelry maker builds your piece as a digital 3D model — exact ring size, exact stone dimensions, exact proportions. This is where changes are cheapest and fastest to make.
- 3D-printed proof. The digital model is printed as a physical resin proof, true to scale. You try it on, check how it sits on your hand or neck, and confirm every detail in person.
- You confirm — or we adjust. If anything feels off — a band too thin, a setting too high — we revise the 3D model and print again. Nothing moves to metal until you’re satisfied with the proof.
- Cast, set, and finish. Once you approve, the design is cast in high-purity gold in our Phnom Penh atelier, stones are set by hand under magnification, and the piece is polished, weighed, and hallmarked before it’s handed to you.
What we can customize
- Engagement and wedding rings — including matching sets designed together
- Necklaces and pendants — from a simple line to a full statement piece
- Earrings and bracelets
- Remakes — turning old or inherited gold into a new design you’ll actually wear (pairs well with our gold trade-in service)
Every custom order above 0.3 carat carries GIA certification on the diamond, same as our ready-made collection.
How long it takes
Most commissions run 7–14 days from your approved 3D proof to the finished, polished piece — faster for simple designs, longer for intricate multi-stone work. Wedding-date pieces are prioritized; tell us the date and we plan backwards from it.
Starting a commission
There’s no cost or obligation to see a 3D design and printed proof of your idea — it’s part of how every custom piece at LAAR EK Jewelry begins. Bring a photo, a sketch, or even a rough idea and we’ll take it from there.
