Natural vs CVD/HPHT Lab-Grown Diamonds: What's Actually Different?

Short answer

Chemically, physically, and optically, a natural diamond and a CVD/HPHT lab-grown diamond are the same material: crystallized carbon, 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, with identical fire and brilliance. The real differences are origin, rarity, and price — not quality. A natural diamond formed 1–3 billion years underground and was mined; a CVD or HPHT diamond was grown in a lab over a few weeks. Neither is “fake” — both are graded and certified by the same labs (GIA, IGI) using the same 4Cs standard. This page walks through the practical differences so you can choose with your eyes open, not marketing.

The side-by-side

Natural diamond CVD / HPHT diamond
Material Pure carbon, diamond crystal lattice Pure carbon, diamond crystal lattice
Hardness 10 Mohs 10 Mohs
Brilliance & fire Identical Identical
Formation 1–3 billion years, deep underground 2–4 weeks, in a lab
Rarity Finite, mined Effectively unlimited supply
Typical price for same size/quality Baseline 30–50% lower
Resale value Holds value better, established secondary market Lower resale value, market still maturing
Certification GIA / IGI, marked “natural” GIA / IGI, marked “laboratory-grown”

Where the price gap actually comes from

It’s not a quality gap — it’s a supply gap. Natural diamonds are geologically finite and expensive to find, mine, and bring to market: exploration, extraction, sorting, and cutting all add cost before a stone reaches a jeweler. CVD and HPHT diamonds skip the geological timeline and mining infrastructure entirely, so a lab can produce a stone with the same carat, cut, color, and clarity for meaningfully less. That’s the entire explanation for the price difference — the finished diamond itself isn’t inferior.

How to choose

There’s no universally “right” answer — it depends on what you’re buying it for:

Buying either — or both — in Cambodia

At LAAR EK Jewelry (ហាងពេជ្រល្អឯក) in Phnom Penh, we sell natural diamonds and CVD/HPHT lab-grown diamonds side by side, loose or set, wholesale and retail (មានលក់បោះដុំ និងរាយ ពេជ្រសុទ្ធ និង ពេជ្រ CVD/HPHT). Every stone above 0.3 carat comes with an independent GIA or IGI certificate — read our GIA vs IGI guide for how to read one, or our CVD and HPHT explainers for how each is actually made.
